Srinagar, Dec 18 (KNO): In a significant drive to curb the drug menace and its links to terrorism, police in north Kashmir's Kupwara district have registered 67 cases under the NDPS Act in 2024, leading to the arrest of 103 individuals involved in drug peddling and trafficking. Speaking with the reporters, SSP Ghulam Jeelani Wani, as per the news agency — Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that over the past three months alone, 20 cases have been registered, while today, in a major development, seven individuals were detained under the stringent PIT NDPS Act, taking the total number of such detentions in 2024 to 14. He said three residential properties linked to terror-related activities were attached under the UAPA, adding that the comprehensive crackdown underscores the district police’s commitment to eradicating narcotics and narco-terror activities. "Earlier today, acting on specific intelligence, Kupwara Police, in collaboration with the Army, conducted a search operation in the Chinotra area of Amrohi near the Line of Control (LoC). The operation led to the recovery of a narco-terror consignment, including 4 packets of heroin-like substance weighing 3.798 kilograms, along with arms and ammunition comprising 4 pistols and 6 magazines," the SSP said. He said these items were concealed by unidentified terrorists with malicious intent. An FIR (No. 64/2024) under sections of the NDPS Act, UAPA, and IA Act has been registered, and investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators and their network, he added. SSP Jeelani said the efforts have led to notable seizures of contraband and proceeds of crime in 2024. These include 21.82 kilograms of heroin, 2.37 kilograms of charas, 30 kilograms of poppy husk, 202 bottles of illicit liquor, and Rs 93,705 in cash. "To disrupt the financial and logistical operations of drug traffickers, we have also attached five residential properties of those involved in narcotics-related crimes," he informed. The progress we have made this year reflects our unwavering resolve to fight against narcotics and terrorism, the officer said, adding, “We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of the region by dismantling these networks and holding those responsible accountable.” The SSP urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
